Who is Nat?

My name is Natalie Husk, although most people call me Nat (except my parents!). I was born and raised in Cornwall and am proud of it! I have always been involved in the church, whether going to my local village chapel in Common Moor, joining with bus loads from Cornwall at MAYC events, helping at the District Children’s Holiday or even attending Synod a few times! I am very thankful to the Cornwall District, the Liskeard & Looe Circuit and of course Common Moor chapel for being such valuable parts in my journey of faith.

Today I live in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, where I work as a youth worker for the Methodist Church. I run after school clubs, youth clubs, a youth fellowship, do outreach work and organise trips away. Not long ago I was asked by a youth group, to give them a weekly topic for reflection, an email containing something to focus them on God for the week. So every week I sit at my computer and write down my thoughts! It started quite small, with just the young people receiving them, and now lots of people of all ages find my thoughts in their email inbox!

It is a huge privilege for me to find that people enjoy and are challenged by what I have written, especially that I can now share what God has done for me with those who walked with me at the beginning of my journey. Ultimately these reflections are aimed at the young people I now work with, but if God can speak to others through them, how great is that!!

Eurovision

Well, it’s that great time of year again! The time for joy, happiness and much rejoicing. Yes, it’s EUROVISION!!!!! Unlike the vast majority of the sane population of this country, I love Eurovision! It’s a great opportunity to laugh at the rest of Europe and their so called ‘taste in music’! Expectations are running high…expectations of cheesy music, strange costumes, hilarious dance routines and of course the expectation that the UK receives nil points! I love it! The expectations that Terry Wogan will make tons of sarcastic comments without other countries realising he’s taking the mick, that the voting will be 100% political (hence no-one voting for us!), expectations that we are the only country in Europe who doesn’t take this competition seriously, and the expectation that our slightly pervy entry comes last! Yay!

I hope that you will be, as I will be, glued to your seat on Saturday night, eagerly watching to see if this cheesy talent (or lack of
talent!) contest lives up to it’s expectations! But what about us? Do we live up to the expectations that people place on us or do we fight against them, desperately trying to change the path others have chosen for us? Are we like Eurovision frantically trying to gain respect whilst constantly battling against belittling comments from those like Terry Wogan judging us from the sidelines? Maybe we are like Daz Sampson (the lucky man representing our great nation!) destined to fail but enjoying the ride? Maybe we are like Gemini (the out of tune UK act from a few years ago) where people expect too much from us and the pressure to succeed is just too great.

This has got me thinking about what expectations I place on others, expectations that they can not always fulfil. What about my expectations for God – do I expect Him to protect me from harm and always show up in a spectacular way when I’m ready for Him? Is that why I get angry with God when things don’t go according to my plan – was God not living up to my small and unintelligent expectations of Him? Surely He is greater than that, bigger than anything I could expect Him to do. Surely that is the wonder of knowing God, that He is beyond our wildest dreams, that He has such great promise for us, vaster than our expectations could begin to stretch to.

So let’s not put our expectations and limitations on God, and if we are going to live up to anyone’s expectations, let us strive to live up to His!

Enjoy Eurovision and the rest of the week,

love Nat xxx
