Who is Nat?

My name is Natalie Husk, although most people call me Nat (except my parents!). I was born and raised in Cornwall and am proud of it! I have always been involved in the church, whether going to my local village chapel in Common Moor, joining with bus loads from Cornwall at MAYC events, helping at the District Children’s Holiday or even attending Synod a few times! I am very thankful to the Cornwall District, the Liskeard & Looe Circuit and of course Common Moor chapel for being such valuable parts in my journey of faith.

Today I live in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, where I work as a youth worker for the Methodist Church. I run after school clubs, youth clubs, a youth fellowship, do outreach work and organise trips away. Not long ago I was asked by a youth group, to give them a weekly topic for reflection, an email containing something to focus them on God for the week. So every week I sit at my computer and write down my thoughts! It started quite small, with just the young people receiving them, and now lots of people of all ages find my thoughts in their email inbox!

It is a huge privilege for me to find that people enjoy and are challenged by what I have written, especially that I can now share what God has done for me with those who walked with me at the beginning of my journey. Ultimately these reflections are aimed at the young people I now work with, but if God can speak to others through them, how great is that!!

Phlegm

Urgh, gross! I’m not too sure about the design plan when God set about making phlegm. Mucus. Snot. Disgusting green stuff. Whatever you call it, it’s pretty minging!

Over the last few days I have had the great privilege of producing this gungey stuff all included as part of this stinking cold/fluey thing. Perhaps I should say mass produce as I’ll never know how that much can come out of one person! I know, I know, it’s truly disgusting and you don’t want to be reading about this at the start of a potentially great week. But the fact is, it’s got me thinking. We live in a world where the earth’s natural resources are running out. We use so much coal, oil, natural gas, all of which are finite and due to run out in the not too distant future. We are not using more renewable resources such as wind, sun and how about snot?? I mean, every year millions of people produce tons of the stuff, and it just gets thrown out in used tissues and dirty hankies. What if the phlegm could be harnessed, collected and used for good!

Wow, just thinking about this has really got my mind going! What about the power of a sneeze – another renewable resource, never due to run out. The average sneeze is around 100 mph – think of all that unused energy just waiting to be tapped into. There could be rooms with people sniffing flowers or pepper, making themselves sneeze in order to light up our cities! Imagine being paid to sneeze!

Now back to reality (shame I know, but if you ever see sneeze or phlegm factories, remember where you heard the idea first!). I’m guessing we’ll never harness the power of a sneeze or the ooziness of mucus and in some ways that makes me sad. All that untapped potential. I wonder what skills, talents or giftings you have that will never come to anything, things that you maybe take for granted as a by-product of something else in your life. Something that you discard without any thought, or perhaps something you reject. I don’t fully (or even partially) understand the intricate workings of the human body, with all the systems and processes and phlegm producers. But I know someone who does, the guy who designed it in fact. I know also that it all fits together without me needing to have all the knowledge and understanding. Therefore I trust that He does the same for my life, that He had a plan when he gave me these skills, these talents, this personality. I guess what I’m trying to say is that while we trust God made us like we are, lets be careful not to just throw away our untapped potential – you never know when it may come in handy!

One more last titbit of information for you about sneezing. Did you know that Thomas Edison came up with the idea of movies from watching someone sneeze in 1888? He was looking at still sequential pictures of someone sneezing, and realized that if you viewed them quickly in a sequence, that you might be able to make a movie. And who says you can’t use the power of a sneeze for something good!
