Who is Nat?

My name is Natalie Husk, although most people call me Nat (except my parents!). I was born and raised in Cornwall and am proud of it! I have always been involved in the church, whether going to my local village chapel in Common Moor, joining with bus loads from Cornwall at MAYC events, helping at the District Children’s Holiday or even attending Synod a few times! I am very thankful to the Cornwall District, the Liskeard & Looe Circuit and of course Common Moor chapel for being such valuable parts in my journey of faith.

Today I live in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, where I work as a youth worker for the Methodist Church. I run after school clubs, youth clubs, a youth fellowship, do outreach work and organise trips away. Not long ago I was asked by a youth group, to give them a weekly topic for reflection, an email containing something to focus them on God for the week. So every week I sit at my computer and write down my thoughts! It started quite small, with just the young people receiving them, and now lots of people of all ages find my thoughts in their email inbox!

It is a huge privilege for me to find that people enjoy and are challenged by what I have written, especially that I can now share what God has done for me with those who walked with me at the beginning of my journey. Ultimately these reflections are aimed at the young people I now work with, but if God can speak to others through them, how great is that!!

As Bonnie Tyler Sang - I'm Holding Out For A Hero!

Before I even start this thought, I know that I will get responses of complaint. You see I am writing about fantasy TV, and I believe with all my heart, that the best fantasy TV is Angel. I know that some may argue it’s Buffy or Charmed or even Star Trek, Smallville, Lost or Doctor Who. But you are wrong. It’s Angel. Let me explain why:

He’s gorgeous and he saves the world. What more do you need? Phwoar!

Episode by episode this hilarious action packed show tells of how a sexy vampire (with a soul!) selflessly saves the world. And the world doesn’t even realise how many apocalypses he’s saved us from! (yes I do know it’s not real! L )

The point is he is a hero, a champion, a life-saver (although I don’t think we ever see him swim!) and all in 45 minutes! When I watch it, although I love every minute, I am sometimes left feeling a little empty, I mean it’s not like I ever save the world from some bloodsucking demon. I don’t get to play with cool swords or axes. I don’t get the satisfaction of knowing that the world is safer because I’m in it. Although I do get the satisfaction of being able to go out in daylight! The other thing about Angel is his cool gang. They all hang out together and talk in a cool way and they are basically so cool. Hmm, not sure I fit into that category either.

So as great as Angel is, he’s not real and therefore as a hero he’s unfulfilling (although still better than the others!). I know another guy, a real guy, who’s also a hero, a champion and a life-saver and he walks on water so no need to swim! He’s already done the whole battle to save the world thing so that I don’t have to, and he restores us so no emptiness after an encounter with Him. Though granted, following this hero is rarely deemed cool in this life, but I’m guessing we’ll be the popular ones when we get to heaven, and that coolness will last an eternity! Can you guess who it is yet…..?!

Therefore as you settle in to watch another episode of whatever escapism you prefer, remember that it’s not real, it’s on a set and they are actors (if not stunning actors!). Then remember the true hero who is 100% real, is with you always and who has saved the world, who has saved you. Remember Jesus, the greatest champion of all, who will always save you if you ask.

Now, back to Angel ….mmm!

Have a great week in the sun, although please remember the suncream! Lots of love, Nat xxx
