Who is Nat?

My name is Natalie Husk, although most people call me Nat (except my parents!). I was born and raised in Cornwall and am proud of it! I have always been involved in the church, whether going to my local village chapel in Common Moor, joining with bus loads from Cornwall at MAYC events, helping at the District Children’s Holiday or even attending Synod a few times! I am very thankful to the Cornwall District, the Liskeard & Looe Circuit and of course Common Moor chapel for being such valuable parts in my journey of faith.

Today I live in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, where I work as a youth worker for the Methodist Church. I run after school clubs, youth clubs, a youth fellowship, do outreach work and organise trips away. Not long ago I was asked by a youth group, to give them a weekly topic for reflection, an email containing something to focus them on God for the week. So every week I sit at my computer and write down my thoughts! It started quite small, with just the young people receiving them, and now lots of people of all ages find my thoughts in their email inbox!

It is a huge privilege for me to find that people enjoy and are challenged by what I have written, especially that I can now share what God has done for me with those who walked with me at the beginning of my journey. Ultimately these reflections are aimed at the young people I now work with, but if God can speak to others through them, how great is that!!

Age

Hey there!

Over the Easter hols I’ve had my mummy and daddy stay with me. I love it when they come to stay, because not only does dad do a lot of odd jobs around the house, and mum likes to clean (despite my best efforts to clean before they arrive!) but I also get to feel like a kid again. Most of the time I live on my own, which has it’s advantages, but which means I have to do everything. If I want a cuppa I have to get it, if something needs doing I have to do it (or wait for my dad to come to the rescue next visit!). There is no-one around to do them for me, and most of all there is no-one around when I’m feeling down and want a cuddle. So when my parents visit I get a cup of tea brought to me in bed (albeit at some ungodly hour of the morning!), I get my tea cooked for me and most of all, I get cuddles. You are never too old for a good cuddle! And as my parents wrap their protective arms around me, I feel like a child again.

Being a kid is so great…you get to watch cartoons (although the stuff on now is no where near as good as when I was a child!), you get to play all day long, you have absolutely no responsibilities and you can be really, really silly! Yay!

My parents are now retired and so it means when they do come up to stay, I hear about all the things they get up to, the places they visit and the total lackage of work, and I get jealous. Don’t get me wrong, I love my work, but the thought of living a life of retirement seems a better option.

Being retired must be so great…you get to watch trashy daytime TV (murder she wrote and Richard & Judy – without the guilty feeling!), you get to do the things you want to – hobbies, crafts, sports, basically playing all day long, and you have fewer responsibilities and you can be really, really silly and blame it on your age!! Yay!

So you see, I’m torn between wanting to be a child again and wanting to be old enough to retire, which is really silly. When I think about it I actually like where I am in my life. Being 27 has it’s good side and I don’t want to waste my life constantly looking at other people or other ages, wishing I was at that stage. So yes, lets rejoice in great children’s TV, lets take every opportunity (however old we are) to be silly and have fun, but lets not forget how old we are. If you are 13, be happy being 13. If you are 16, enjoy it and don’t long to be older. If you are older, make the most of what life has already given you, and all that lays ahead of you. Don’t wish your life away or live constantly in the past – today is a gift from God, so live it at the age you are now!

 Take care, Nat xxx
