MEDIA RELEASE

Two new Methodist Circuits planned in Cornwall reshaping

New opportunities for mission in West Cornwall will be made possible by proposed changes to some of the Methodist Church’s structures.

Talks between the leaders of churches in Redruth, Camborne and Falmouth have led to plans to make two circuits out of the present three.

The idea mirrors developments around the country where there is a move nationally towards larger circuits with the opportunities for increased staff support and some specialist ministries.

"The proposal is the result of a great deal of heart-searching and prayer by the people in all three areas," said the Rev Dr Chris Blake, Chair of the Cornwall Methodist District.

"We asked how best to be God’s people for today and believe that, ultimately, the two new circuits will energise the people for mission."

The new Falmouth and Gwennap Circuit, which will start on September 1, will consist of the chapels in the existing Falmouth Circuit and the following chapels from the Redruth Circuit: Lanner, Stithians, St Day, Carharrack, Crofthandy, Penmarth, Carnkie (Redruth), North Country United.

The Camborne Circuit and the following Redruth churches – Redruth, Four Lanes, Porthtowan, Mawla, Bridge, Carn Brea – are continuing preparation for their agreed aim of uniting in 2009.

The churches in the current Falmouth Circuit, all of which will join the new Falmouth and Gwennap Circuit, are Falmouth, Penryn, Mylor, Flushing, Frogpool, Perranwell, Ponsanooth, Mawnan Smith, Port Navas, Edgcumbe, Trenoweth and Treverva.

The churches in the Camborne Circuit are Centenary, Wesley, Paynters Lane End, Illogan Highway, Pool, Brea, Troon, Beacon, Kehelland, Wall and Barripper.
